(1449-1492)  A member of the Medici family, Lorenzo de Medici ruled Florence from 1469 until his premature death at the age of 43. Lorenzo was recognized as a great poet as well as a generous patron of the arts, giving commissions to Botticelli, Verrocchio and Michelangelo. (See also  Giuliano de Medici.)
